The deadliest year was 2000, with 1430 fatalities from 63 crashes.

The safest year was 2023, with only 102 fatalities from 4 crashes.

The deadliest single crash occurred in 2014, when a Malaysia Airlines plane was hit by a Russian missile midair, killing all 298 people onboard.

Even with more flights than ever, the number of crashes since 2000 has reduced drastically. The 5 year rolling average has dropped from more than 50 crashes in 2000 to under 10 crashes in 2025, showing a significant improvement in airplane safety.
